Happy 1-Year Anniversary to Sedric Hatnot
Here at Lockaway Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our renters is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with San Antonio team member Sedric Hatnot, who is celebrating his 1-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage this week. All interviews are performed by Peter Soto.
Sedric is a manager at Lockaway Storage – Randolph in San Antonio.
Peter: Hey, Sedric! Your one year anniversary is coming up pretty soon, so I have to ask. How did you find out about Lockaway Storage?
Sedric: The way I found out about Lockaway Storage was during a tough time my wife and I were having. We were looking for storage and we found the Lockaway Storage off of Rittiman and at the time Thomas was working there and he treated us well. He was all STRAT. He helped us out so tremendously. We rented with him for a year or two and then I wanted to make a transition. At the time I was going to school and I had been at my job for 10 years, so I was looking to make a change that was going to help me use my business degree. I have a degree in business and christian ministry. I was looking on Indeed and I found Lockaway and they were looking for a manager. So I applied and in the back of my head I remembered Thomas did an awesome job and I’m a minister, so I love to help people and he helped me so much, I was like, “I want to do that.” I applied and it’s been a blessing. I just do the best I can as the manager at Randolph. Just like Thomas did at Rittiman. Everything he was about, I wanted to do the same thing. So I got to kind of thank Thomas. He knows, I’ve already told him plenty of times.
Peter: That’s a great story. I want to to back to something to said earlier. Earlier when you were a renter you said that Thomas was “All STRAT” would you mind elaborating on what it means to be “All STRAT”?
Sedric: To be “All STRAT” first means that you treat people the way they want to be treated. I was trying not to get too personal, but me and my wife were renting and the land lord wasn’t paying his part, so they came after him and we were in his establishment, so they made us move out and we weren’t prepared for that.Thomas, he did an excellent job. He asked us what was going on and how he could help. He showed sympathy and he cared. He said, “I’m sorry to hear that and what I can do to help is…” He just showed the love and the compassion. I have those things and I thought it would be great if I could do them at Randolph. When people come in ,show that STRAT. Show that you care and do everything you can to show the customer, because a lot of times the customer is having a hard time already. By keeping the facility clean, showing friendliness and showing that I care about them, I know it goes a long way. That’s kind of what I do here at Randolph.
Peter: That’s great customer service right there.
Sedric: Yes, sir.
Peter: Another things you touched on earlier is your ministry. Would you mind telling me more about what ministry means to you and about that part of your life?
Sedric: Sure. Well, I was raised in it, so it’s sort of a tradition. My dad was a pastor and he pastored a church for about twenty some odd years and I helped him with that.I always wanted to be like my dad of course, so I started to just mimic him. You know, as a kid you want to be like your dad. When I found out what it was about, you know ministry is about helping people spiritually. You know, a lot of us sometimes have issues spiritually, mentally things of that nature and that’s kind of me. That’s my heart. Every time I see someone who needs help or is homeless, I really want to help them. We did have a food drive recently that went ok. As a minister, it’s my job to care for people spiritually, mentally, and physically. That’s also why I am going to school, to be a better business person and use the ministry not only to better myself, but to help others. I do believe in the word of God, especially because it helped me get through my troubles. There was a story, I wasn’t going to tell it, but there was a lady who came in and said she was homeless, so I asked her how I
could help. She said she was looking for a unit that wasn’t too expensive. We found a unit that worked for her and she cried a little and I just tried to lift her up. After we were done, she thanked me and said that we had been a blessing. She was grateful that I had been loving and let her know that it’s not over. There are a lot of people who come in feeling like it’s the end, but it’s not over. I tried to let her know that we all have issues and problems, but we endure. If we can learn how to give in to the lord, we will make it past the storm. Storms are not forever. That’s what makes me love my job even more.
Peter: For sure. You get the chance to help people out. So you also talked about how working as a self storage facility manager was helping you use your business degree. Would you mind speaking more about that?
Sedric: Right now I have one more year left before I graduate and I’ll get a double major. I’ll get my Christian ministry degree and then my business degree. I should be a senior pretty soon. One more semester. We’re in the process of starting a nonprofit and I had my first speaking engagement recently. It was a youth Sunday, so the pastor of the church I go to asked me to speak.
Peter: That’s great. So you live in the San Antonio area, I presume?
Sedric: I’m born and raised. It’s awesome. It’s slow. It’s family. People are laid back and I am a laid back person. At the same time I love to deal with people. San Antonio people are friendly. They love the lord and love to be around people. That’s what San Antonio is about. Like the Spurs. They are family oriented. Everybody should see the Alamo and the River Walk. We got the Spurs, the Missions. I like the old buildings downtown and the way they do the lights during Christmas. It’s so beautiful down there.
Peter: Any restaurants in the area you think people need to try?
Sedric: Las Palapas is pretty great. It’s a Mexican restaurant. Chachos is pretty great.
Peter: You’re probably the third person to recommend Chachos to me. What is so great about it?
Sedric: Haha, yeah, they have something called King Nachos. Seems like it’s three or four plates and it is just a mound of nachos and meat. It’s ridiculous, but it’s good.
Peter: I am definitely trying Chachos when I come down next.
Sedric: Have you heard of Big Lou’s? They have a pizza so big one slice will fill you up. Once slice is like four or five normal slices. Look it up! The pizza is delicious too, but there is just so much.
Peter: Alright. Last question. Is there anyone at Lockaway you would like to give a shout out to?
Sedric: Ok, not just saying this because he is the owner, but Don Clauson has been just amazing. He’s taken care of me ever since I got here. He’s been so nice. Every time we have an event like the Missions’ baseball game or the hockey game, he’s just been so loving. We had the picnic and he gave us all a big hug. Even my wife was like, “That’s the owner? He is so caring and loving! You can tell he cares about you guys.” I said, “I know! This is amazing. This is the first time I met someone who is the owner and cares about his people. I think that’s why the employees here are so caring and loving. He’s the head. When you look at the body from the head to the foot, it starts with the head. If you’re loving and kind and all of that stuff, it will show in your employees. So I want to send a shoutout to Mr. Don Clauson, because that’s amazing! I’m learning a lot from him.
Banana Splits on Friday, 5/25, at Lockaway Storage on Randolph
Do you like ice cream? Maybe even love it? How about a Banana Split?
If you have even an inkling of desire for the deliciously melty dessert, and happen to live in or near Schertz, Texas, then you’re in luck! Lockaway Storage near Randolph Air Force Base is hosting a Banana Split event in their office on May 25th from open to close!
Facility Manager Sedric Hatnot will be hosting the event and said that he enjoys showing appreciation for his self storage community. He wants everyone to feel like they’re at home when they come to the facility. By making the facility a welcoming place, Sedric sees the facility as a place that not only helps care for things, but for people.
“I also feel like by doing this we can also help people that come in and see that we do stuff for them as well. It’s not just renting units and things of that nature. There’s another side of it – we appreciate them for doing so.”
Banana Splits for Customer Appreciation
May 25th, 2018
Lockaway Storage on Randolph Road
9482 E FM 1518 N
Schertz, TX 78154
Customers of Lockaway Storage!
Because Lockaway Storage believes in showing appreciation.
Sedric went on to credit other lockaway team members for creating a culture that instills this customer centric focus. “I love how Henry and Don do things. Before they even talk about company stuff, they want to know how you’re doing. How the person is doing.”
“So I feel the same way. The customers are renting from us or things of that nature. I love to give back to them as well. It also helps, so that they’ll say ‘You know what? Man, at Lockaway Storage they really appreciate us renting and stuff. They did a Banana Split!’
“So of course that will draw other people in, and they’ll be like ‘Oh really?! Well what else do they do?’ and they’ll be like ‘They do the barbeque, they do the hotdog, they do the donut’
“Then they’re like ‘Wow!’ So that’s what I want to do. It also helps with the marketing. It brings people in like ‘Okay I’m going to rent, but they’re gonna feed me sometimes too? Wow!’ “
From barbeques to donut days, this facility is never in short supply. Maybe this is part of the reason why Sedric is able to describe community at Lockaway Storage Randolph as “Very Close”.
Of course the other part has to do with the facility’s customers.
Many of Sedric’s larger units are home to a variety of handy clientele,“They might work on cars, small businesses, welding, and they work on cars and stuff like that.”
One day as Sedric was making his usual rounds, he had a surprising request from one of these tenants.
“Of course i go out there and talk to them. And Make sure they’re doing what they’re supposed to. But they told me just a while ago that they wanted to do a barbeque for the community.
“I don’t have that on the marketing but the tenants want to do that for everybody. And even myself. I guess they’re gonna get all the meat and the barbeque pit.”
Sedric said he will have to run the idea past the District Manager, but expressed how this gesture showed the character of his tenants. From sharing tools to sharing a lunch, the organic camaraderie of the tenants helps make the Lockaway Storage Randolph Facility a comfortable home for their customers belongings, and for the customers themselves.
Until then, why not stop by the office this Wednesday for some delicious banana splits? There will be chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream along with plenty of sprinkles, chocolate syrup, and of course, bananas. Like Sedric said, this is his way of showing the facility’s appreciation for its customers and others who may be interested in renting, so bring a friend!
Self Storage Milestone: Happy 2-Year Anniversary to Sedric Hatnot!
Here at Lockaway Storage, we know our success is due to our wonderful team. The care they give our renters is unparalleled and we want to highlight their milestones along the way. Below is an interview with team member Sedric Hatnot, who is celebrating his 2-year anniversary with Lockaway Storage.
Sedric is the Professional Storage Manager at Lockaway Storage near Randolph Air Force Base.
Colby: Get me up to speed here Sedric, how long have you worked here and what anniversary are you celebrating?
Sedric: Two years, we are coming up on my first two years.
Colby: Is self storage what you expected it to be?
Sedric: Yes, it was, because when I utilized the facility as a tenant I was going through somewhat of a tough time and I met Thomas and he really helped me out both with what I needed and also in a way to feel more comfortable with my situation. After that, I was like, “Well, this is something that I want to do.” So, I applied and came on and it very much is a customer service job. I found that this is what I want to do, and two years later still enjoying the company.
Colby: That’s pretty cool. You got a chance to see what the company was like as a client before becoming an employee. What advice would you give somebody if they were coming to Lockaway Storage and they had no storage experience whatsoever?
Sedric: I would tell them to talk to the other employees here. That’s what Thomas did for me. I saw the things that he did and the skills he had. I would also recommend even for a month or so renting a unit, so you know what you are getting involved in and what tenants would be looking for.
Colby: You’ve been on both sides of the desks, so I bet that must help. Sedric, tell me a little about yourself outside of storage. You mentioned you are a minister, what hobbies do you have and what keeps you busy when you aren’t at the facility?
Sedric: What keeps me busy is school. I am in school and I will graduate this year. I already have two degrees, and I am going to get my Christian Ministry degree. I am really excited and a lot of communities really need help. That’s why when I found out about storage I was like, “Wow, you are really helping people.” This is an excellent place to meet people who need help and assist them. My hobbies are studying and preaching and teaching, so there are some studies I do for God as well. I love my family and studying the word of God.
Colby: Where are you getting your business degree and your Christian ministry degrees?
Sedric: Wayland Baptist University. It’s an awesome school. There are a lot of military folks that go in and apply. I have been there four years.
“Sedric? Man, I love this guy. Not only is he motivated, he is always trying to bring his property above par. He’s always clean. He keeps the office clean. He keeps the grounds clean. You can tell he takes a lot of pride in the presentation, the curb appeal of the property. Most importantly, he is very, very coachable. That’s what I like about him. He’s not afraid to ask for help. He is not afraid to accept the coaching that I give him, anything that’s going to make him a better manager. He took a property that was in the low 50’s and 60’s in terms of occupancy and now it’s coming close to 90% now. The turnaround for him, was that he thought he was the worst store in terms of occupancy and revenue, but when I showed him where he was compared to the rest of the team, he was in the middle of the pack. He became motivated, because I think he realized that he wasn’t doing that bad. His momentum started kicking off right there.”
Henry Medrano, Self Storage District Manager
Colby: You are obviously a guy who likes to help people and give people advice and be there for them. Do you have any stories that really stand out of you being able to help out somebody in a meaningful way?
Sedric: There is a story about a homeless lady. She was having rough times. The thing is, Henry and Don, they care about you first. That’s one thing I love about those guys. They care about you and they are going to help you. I tried to cheer her and tell her things never last and things get better. I assured her she was in the right place. She said she was a daycare worker and took care of kids and before she left she said I really helped her. She said she really needed our help and things were turning around. It was just like I told her, things happen for a reason and it’s only a season. I am really proud of her and I am sure she is way better off now than when she first met me.
Colby: That’s a great story. Thank you for sharing. To change directions a bit, do you have a favorite restaurant near the facility?
Sedric: At lunch, there’s a place called Youz Guyz and they make sub sandwiches and Philly cheesesteaks that are really good. We only get 30 minutes for lunch, so I can go there and grab a sandwich and fries real fast.
Colby: Youz Guyz, like how you speak in New Jersey?
Sedric: Yeah, that’s where they are from.
Colby: Gotcha, you mentioned that you do some preaching now, what church do you preach at or is there one you attend regularly?
Sedric: Yes, sir Living Faith Fellowship Church they have an awesome ministry. They do really good teaching when it comes to the word of God. I help out there now and it’s going awesome
Colby: Excellent. Last question. Is there anybody that you would like to give a shout out to that has helped you out in the years so far?
Sedric: I would say the community. Everybody as a whole is amazing, and I love that. You can come into Lockaway Storage and you can tell right away that the people that work here care about their business and people.
